Fred Mendelsohn is an Illinois licensed attorney with over 30 years experience in the Insurance Industry. Fred has an impressive record in serving both in the Public Sector as Chief Counsel of the Illinois Department of Insurance and as Senior Counsel in the California Department of Insurance; and, in the Private Sector as Sr. Vice President & General Counsel of the Horace Mann Group of Insurance Companies, and the Argonaut Insurance Company. Most recently, he was Assistant General Counsel with CNA in Chicago. Due to his background and experience he is able to bring a unique perspective to the understanding of the operations of insurance companies and can furnish valuable advice on dealing with a broad range of insurance related matters.
As a former General Counsel of two insurance groups, he has dealt with a wide variety of insurance, corporate legal, and executive matters that run the gamut from policyholder claims and litigation to financial and investment issues. He has served on Corporate Boards and is familiar with up-to-date corporate governance and ethics concerns. He has a proven track record in the specialized area of creating and operating Separate Accounts (both for variable and guaranteed products) and has worked in tandem with actuaries and financial executives to create Separate Accounts and new and novel products for them. He is experienced in the marketing of such products. He has successfully dealt with complex reinsurance problems, and also with the intricacies of corporate insolvencies, both as a state insurance regulator and as a private attorney.
Fred has extensive experience in state insurance regulatory matters. While serving as a regulatory official with both the Illinois and California Departments of Insurance, he wrote Insurance Department Regulations on a variety of topics, including Advertising of Life Insurance, Variable Annuities and Separate Accounts, Policy Form Filing, Insurance Holding Company Systems, and Department Hearing Procedures. He has published articles in trade periodicals and spoken widely on insurance matters.
He was the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association, (which dealt with numerous insurance company insolvencies) as well as Chairman of its Audit Committee. He has a distinguished record of public service.
